Bridgelea Jerseys Dispersed

A very great deal of the prosperity of this country is derived from the native talent of New Zealanders in the breeding of farm stock. Especially true is this of the breeding of dairy cattle. In Gisborne there are some fine herds, whose virtues are bred into cattle over the length and breadth of the land. Among the farming community, interest is always keen in the work of breeders. And so, when a herd of pedigree Jersey cattle of the calibre of Messrs S. and Est. M. Spence at Muriwai was offered at a complete dispersal sale recently, buyers were present from far and near to enter their bids. In a large tent on the property, animals like Bridgelea Sam's Jester, whose young stock swept the boards at the 1957 show, and Bridgelea Cynthia, whose butterfat figures for some years were in the 400's, came under the hammer and acquired new owners.

Nails For Your Tyres

Returning from the dispersal sale at Muriwai, our photographer caught up with the Roads Board magnetic truck, and after seeing the collection of nails, etc. picked up on the highway between Bartletts and Manutuke (left), he began to worry about whether it was safe to go ahead on the unswept highway ahead of the truck! Staples, nails, wire and bottle-tops comprise the main part of the collection.
