Soap-box Derby on Barker's Hill

The second Great Soapbox Derby thrilled a large crowd on Barker's Hill as speeding cars whizzed round the bends and flashed over the finish line like miniature Indianapolis "500" competitors.

Organised by the Gisborne-E.C. Scout Association, the event drew an entry of 20 cars.

Most cars reflected the care and ingenuity in construction which are expected from resourceful members of the Scout organisation. There were one or two "pile-ups" as speeding cars got out of control, but the exciting contest was not marred by any fatal accidents (or even, as far as we know, by any lost skin).

It was a good afternoon all round.
