Moutohora Line Closure

A picture taken at the Otoko viaduct on the Moutohora railway, the 48-mile Gisborne branch' line which is to be closed as from March 14, The line has been operating at asubstantal loss for some years, It was begun in 1900, reached Te Karaka in 1905, Waikohu in 1908, Otoko in 1912, Matawai in 1914, and Moutohora in 1917. The original long-range plans visualised a connection with the Bay of Plenty and the Auckland railways system, but it is now considered unlikely that the gap between Moutohora and Taneatua, which is the northern railhead, will ever be completed.
