Old Tolaga Bay

Pictures from Hori Karaka Tamihana, who is best known to Photo News as "The Roving Hori", take readers back into the past of this thriving East Coast centre.

For many years the Uawa River was a real obstacle to travellers up the Coast. Even after it was bridged, communications were occasionally interrupted by flood damage.

Picture shows earlier bridge, constructed of steel on wooden piles, after it had been breached by 1916 flood.

The general store of Geo. H. Williams and Co. before the days of motor transport, showing packhorses lined up ready for a long trek into the back country. Store is now that of Gisborne Sheep-Farmers Company.

The old Court House and Police Station at Tolaga Bay. Both are still on the same sites, but now have modern premises.
