Pictures from the Past

Three interesting postcards sent in by readers will take other readers back a long way in Gisborne history.

The top picture was taken in Gladstone Road away back in the days when the only recognisable feature of the block between Peel & Lowe Streets was the then new Herald Building. The H.B. shop is in the same location as today, but has since been rebuilt. Beyond the Herald is the old Masonic Hotel, and across the Lowe Street intersection is the Coronation Hotel. Beyond It can be seen the Post Office with tower intact.

The band rotunda, freshly removed from the Botanical Gardens, in its present position opposite the junction of the Taruheru and Waimata rivers. In those far away days it had an ornamental roof.
Note that the Wm. Pettie Bridge was not then built.

Labour Bay processions were a big feature in Gisborne in earlier days.
This one, passing the Grey Street intersection in Gladstone Road, was one of the big events of 1910.
The day was very hot and windy.
