Record Catches

The Gisborne Skin-Diving Club held a field day at Pouawa-Tatapouri-Makarori recently, with a competition for the biggest fish caught. But no fish worth mentioning came the way of skindivers that day, and the competition had to be judged on crayfish.

Winners (below) were Bill Raggett&Graham Lewis.

The next Sunday brought a change of luck. The club secretary, John Penny, was diving off the reef near Makarori when he found a 59lb kingfish in his sights. He fired his spear-gun and brought his kill to shore successfully to break by a wide margin the existing record for the largest fish to be caught with a gun in this district. It's certainly a whopper!
