Championship Contenders

Away now at New Plymouth's Oakura Beach to contest premier honours for surf life-saving are Gisborne's top teams, Waikanae A and Waikanae B. Runners-up for the national championship last year, the Waikanae surfers are considered to stand a more than even chance of bringing home the title this time.

If they do, it will be an appropriate honour, for Gisborne is to be host city for the championships in 1960,

Also away at Oakura are members of the Gisborne Ladies' Club, present holders of the New Zealand women's title, and teams from the Midway and Wainui clubs.

Pictures in this series, shot at the local championships at Wainui last month, illustrate the prizewinning form of Waikanae A surfers in action.
