Longest Ship Yet

Two records for the port of Gisborne went by the board late last year when the Danish motor-ship Egyptian Reefer entered the harbour.

The Egyptian Reefer, 362 feet long, was the longest vessel ever to turn in the basin. She was also the first vessel ever to load meat direct for overseas.

Another possible record lay in the fact that the Egyptian Reefer, which carries cargo for U.N., flew the United Nations flag (below). It is understood that this flag has not previously been flown in Gisborne.

Lengths of comparable vessels which have entered the port: Union Power, 350ft: Bal-traffic, 350ft; Tanea (a regular caller), 335ft.
