Bridges for the Pipeline

Prefabricated steel spans of an unusual design, 120ft long, have been noticed heading up Gladstone Road of late. They are bound for Te Arai valley, on the road to Waingake, where they are being installed across the river to carry the city's water supply pipeline.

Two of these bridges have been erected in the vicinity of McLauchlan's cutting, 16 miles from Gisborne, one near the Waingake School, and one at Waingake about 18 miles up.

Transporting the long spans up the winding road was handled by the contractor, Mr Fleming, with the help of Monk Bros. special truck turntable equipment.

Each span weighed five tons.

The laying of the new 21" pipeline over the last two miles to Waingake is now commencing. This section will complete the work of installing the new line from the Waingake works to Gisborne City.
