Food from Waste

As modern methods of food processing develop, housewives tend to forget that peas grow in pods.

In Gisborne, which has rather more than its share of pea pods because Watties process so many peas here, farmers are finding that the green waste from the factory can be turned to good account.

Pictures here show how pea pods are used on an Awapuni Road farm to make ensilage for stock food.

They are heaped in a long trench, left to condition by a process which makes use of internal heat, and in good time produces succulent stock food.
