Speedboat Regatta

If public support can be taken as any criterion, then Gisborne's first speedboat regatta was a resounding success.

Close on 2,000 people gathered on the shores of the Waipaoa River to watch boats from many parts of the North Island compete over a course on the lower section of the river.

Most powerful boat in regatta was "Whirlaway", with an enormous Gipsy Moth aero engine.

The floodbanks provided ideal grandstand view.

Youngest competitor and pilot of the smallest boat in the regatta, was 14-year-old David Ferkins, in "Rascal", a boat which he built himself.

"Josephine" overtakes "Rascal" on the inside.

Boat is immersed in a swirl of its own spray as it rounds buoy at speed.
