The Ormond Road bridge, as well as causing a bottleneck, has been a source of anxiety for many regular users of the bridge. The state of decay is easily seen in the picture of the rotting piles of the bridge's city-side abutment.

A large bridge repair and reconstruction programme is being carried out by the Cook County Council. This bridge in upper Stout Street, just outside the city limits, is in the first stage of being replaced by a two-lane concrete structure. As the new bridge will be some eight feet higher than its predecessor, a considerable amount of filling will be required on both approaches.
