"Southern Cross" Cruising off Tuahine Point

×

At least four of the passengers aboard "Southern Cross" were stirred by their view of Gisborne as the 20,000 ton Shaw Savill passenger liner passed by within two miles of Wainui Beach. They were Gisborne Girls who had joined the "Southern Cross" at Wellington the previous evening, bound for Southampton via Fiji and the Cape of Good Hope.
Perhaps the same four girls felt just a twinge of homesickness as the liner cruised past at her twenty knot cruising speed.

Between two and three thousand spectators lined Wainui Beach to watch the passing of the liner.

Although "Southern Cross" passes up this coastline on her regular voyages to England, this was the first occasion on which she had cruised in so close to the coast.

"Southern Cross" had steamed in off her regular course, by special arrangement with Shaw Savill's Gisborne agents, to enable Gisborne residents to obtain a good view of this impressive tourist liner.
