Although a gusty north westerley wind whipped up the otherwise perfectly calm waters of the bay, the Gisborne Yacht Club's 1958 season got off to a flying start.

With almost twice the number of yachts and pleasure boats in the water as last year, the season is certain to be the most active ever in Gisborne.

So numerous were the boats in the water that one visiting Aucklander compared the bay to Waite-mata harbour on a fine Sunday afternoon.

The question of sail versus power is one prompting constant debate. Naturally the power boat owner's loyalties are with his own breed. The yachtsman, with some justification, considers no man to be a true son of the sea until he has acquired the many skills of yachting.

Even the most avid power-boat enthusiast, however, could hardly deny that the sight of a yacht under full sail is a thing of beauty, beyond comparison.

The same rule holds good whether the yacht be man-size or the miniature "P" class.
