Mobile Boilers

After their sale to the Nelson Hospital Board, three huge 20 ton boilers belonging to the Gisborne Hospital Board, were on the move once again.

If anything, their cartage down the treacherous gradient of hospital hill, was a more difficult task for the contractors than had been their carriage up the hill a year ago.

Each boiler was carried singly down the hill, with a veritable retinue of vehicles to ensure stability to the 20 ton deadweight.

No one part of "Operation Boiler" was simple. The moving of each boiler was a full days work for a team of men.

From an early morn-ning start, it was midday before each boiler was loaded, early afternoon before the convoy set out for the harbour and 5pm by the time they were safely stored at the wharf.

Three crane trucks were required to lift the boiler on to a 12 wheeled trailer.

Unloading at the wharf attracted a tense group of looker-son.

When the Anchor Line vessel "Puriri" arrived at the Port to take delivery, Cook Hospital Engineers took the opportunity to pay their last respects. On each of the three boilers they painted a cryptic message

The heavy lift into the ship's hold, required five winches and a complex array of block and tackle gear and many hundreds of yards of wire rope

"Alone I did it". An impossible hoist for the harbour board's fork lift truck, but operator Alf Burnnand was only too pleased to pose for a "fish story" photo.
