Railway Bridge Opened

After being closed to all trains for a period of approximately 56 hours, the long Job on the railway bridge crossing the Waipaoa River, was finally completed. During this time the 36-ton 60ft spans of the old bridge had to be lifted two feet and re-positioned. The new steel blocks which were placed in position to raise the bridge, can be seen in the lower picture atop the original concrete.

The first heavy train to cross over the newly opened bridge was a 2pm goods. Bridge workers lined the bridge railings for the event. The first use of the new bridge had been made earlier by the midday railcar.
