Gisborne has changed considerably since the picture was taken. Looking up Lowe Street from a vantage point on Read's Quay, the centre of the picture is taken up by the old courthouse, on the site of what is now the C.M.L. building. On the opposite side of Gladstone Road is the old Masonic Hotel, and on the right is Good's building, the only building in the picture which still stands to this day.

A View taken from approximately the site of the Wi Pere monument, is dominated by the old brewery building in Read's Quay. It is likely that the brewery tower was the vantage point for the photographer of the picture above.
