Petrol prices soaring, income tax up, and now we have to sit in the dark to drink the beer and smoke the cigarettes we can't afford to buy!

This is "Jinks", the "boss" of the powerhouse, master operator and chief sole rat catcher. He's been an integral part of power house personnel since he was a pup. Jinks keeps jealous charge of affairs and ensures that circuits are switched out on time.

This powerhouse graph illustrates the up and down of power consumption between the hours of 3.30 and 10.30pm on a recent winter's evening. Each lateral division represents a quarter hour, the uneven line power consumption, rising to a peak at 5.30, dropping off as power cuts are instituted at 5.50,6.00,6.10,6.15, rising in steps as the same circuits are switched back in, to reach normal evening consumption at 7.10. Power saving is indicated by the dotted line between 6 and 7pm showing normal power consumption without cuts.
