One of the most unusual cargoes to be unloaded over the Gisborne wharf of late, was a consignment of frozen whalemeat for use by Watties Canneries in the preparation of cat and dog food.

The icy slabs were unloaded in rope nets and stacked on waiting trucks, which transported them to the freezing works for storage in their chambers until required by the canneries.
