The Hospital Hill slip, on which work has now been completed. Field drains were laid to a pattern below the surface to facilitate drainage, and the surface has now been planted with grass seed. The grass is to be kept short to effect a good run-off.

Messrs Russ Wilcox, Jack Hudson, Basil Kendrew, and Les Kendrew, of the Gisborne Car Club, before leaving to take part in the 500 mile Indianapolis reliability trial from Hamilton to Auckland. In dense fog, driving at night, they made some route mistakes, but finished the long course. A large number of entrants did not make it.

It's been a good season for orchids. Mr G. D. Humphrey in his glasshouse with two plants from which 182 blooms were picked this year. Orchid-growing is an increasing export industry, and one grower in the Bay of Plenty sent away £10,000 worth to the U.S.A. last year.
