The opening of the Gisborne-Napier railway in September, 1942, showing the first passenger train about to leave Gisborne, drawn by two AB engines. This was a notable day in the progress of the district.

The jubilee arch in Gladstone Road on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the formation of the borough. Picture was taken in Peel Street, looking towards the bridge. Bank of New South Wales is on left, and on right is the mercery business of R. Johnson and Co., now C.E. Brown's. Penthouse atop building was removed after the big earthquake a few years later.
