Advice was received at a recent meeting of the Catchment Board that a subsidy of £1 for £1 on £2000 has been approved for erosion control on the Waimata River at the up-river end of the Esplanade, where the roadway has been threatened for some time by the river. View shows the affected portion of the river-bank as seen from the William Pettie bridge.

Members of the Gisborne branch of the Youth Hostels Association, supervised by Mr G. Brodie, have made a start with the construction of their hostel in Salisbury Road, opposite the entrance to Churchill Park camp. Hostel will be 45 by 26 feet, will house 28 persons. Membership of the association in Gisborne is now approaching the 200 mark.
