Big Bush Fire at Otoko

A bush fire which raged over 1000 acres at Otoko towards the end of last month will Be remembered for a long time in that district. Fanned by gale-force winds, the fire advanced to within a few feet of the homestead of Mr J. Charteris before it was fought back by tired fire-fighters, and on Mr J. R. Honey's property, which was one of the centres of the blaze, the flames were within a similar distance of his woolshed. Fortunately rain came at the critical moment, and cheeked the fire before any buildings were destroyed. Most stock escaped by sheltering in gullies. Picture below, in early stage of fire when it involved about 300 acres, was taken by Mrs Honey, of the Brighton Tea Rooms, Gisborne, of burning hillsides on her son's farm.
