Colourful costume and imaginative sets were feature of show

It is now almost taken for granted that when the Gisborne High Schools present an Opera House entertainment, Gilbert and Sullivan will be the choice. These occasions are eagerly anticipated by all associated with the productions, by the rest of the pupils, and by large numbers of parents and the general public. The reason for this enthusiasm is obvius: the schools make such a good job of Gilbert and Sullivan that the result is a delight to everybody, even those to whom comic opera is normally anathema.

This year the producers and the large cast excelled themselves in a rollicking performance of "The Pirates of Penzance" in which there was evidence of talent and application on a scale which would not shame many a professional company.

On this page: the policemen's lot was not a happy one (above), especially when they were routed by the pirates (below). But the tables were soon turned and all ended well.
