Mr and Mrs John Ward, well-known district residents, who celebrated their golden wedding recently. Mr Ward, who came to the East Coast, accompanied by his wife, in 1912, has a long association with the transport industry, and his name is perpetuated in the Peel Street carrying firm of Wards Transport.

Mr Ward was associated for a number of years with various East Coast sheep stations and with the transfer of surf cargoes at Tuparoa. In 1924 he established his own East Coast transport service, and continued in this until he sold out in 1938. The Ellel Parish Church in Lancashire, where Mr and Mrs Ward were the first couple to be married in 1908.
