Iris Lovers Gather In Gisborne

Enthusiasts in the culture of that beautiful flower, the iris, gathered in Gisborne recently from all over New Zealand for their annual conference. The occasion was given a special interest by the presence of four visitors from the U.S.A. and one from Tasmania.

Chief among the overseas visitors was Mr W. F. Scott, of Missouri, president of the St.Louis Horticultural Society and a former first vice-president of the American Iris Society. Others were Mrs Scott, Mr and Mrs K. Anderson, California, Mrs Helen McCaughey, Oklahoma, and Miss Marsh, of Hobart,

The visitors are seen on the stage above as Mr H. H. Barker, Mayor of Gisborne, opened the Poverty Bay Horticultural Society's rose and iris show in the Army Hall. Also on stage, at left, are Mrs G. E. E$ms, president of the Gisborne Iris Society, and Mr E. W. Freeman, (Hexton), president of the P.B. Horticultural Society.

Mr Scott was mystified by a number of exhibits of this plant at the Horticultural Show. In each case the name was different. Eager to know the proper botanical name, he appealed from the stage for information, and duly learned that the proper name was "Echium Candicaus".
