They Sex Themselves

When Golden Legbar chicks are hatched, they have distinctive markings by which anybody can divide the males from the females, thus eliminating the need for chickensexing experts, who now cost the industry in New Zealand £12,000 a year. At present laying figures for the new breed are a little lower than for White Leghorns, but it is expected that this deficiency will be overcome in time.

The first Golden Legbar self-sexing chickens to be hatched in Gisborne. The man responsible isn't a man yet—he's a 14-year-old enthusiast by name of John Cole ,son of Mr and Mrs Charles Cole, Gladstone Road. John takes such a keen interest in poultryraising that he is already a prominent and successful exhibitor at local shows.
