Pictures from the Past

Among Gisborne's notable occasions in the past was the visit of Kingsford Smith's famous aeroplane, "The Southern Cross".
This picture, sent in by Bill Hepburn, of Manutuke, shows the "Southern Cross" taking off from Waikanae Beach. The year, 1935.

Shipwrecks in the old days were more numerous than now. In this picture from Mrs J. Baird, Wairoa, the Huanui is seen high and dry on the beach, while horses and drays are lined up to take off the cargo, some of which is stacked on the sand.
Picture was taken by Mrs Baird's father, Mr Tod Herivel, formerly of Kaiti and now of Auckland.

Another picture of Gladstone Road with the trams in action, with the Grey Street intersection in the foreground. It is understood that the wooden building seen at right is soon to be replaced with a modern block of shops and offices. Picture from Mr Fred Sparrow, Be Lautour Road.
