War Memorial Buildings Dedicates and Opened

In an atmosphere of pride and reverence, tinged with sadness for many, the new War Memorial Buildings of Gisborne and District were dedicated and opened on September 22. The ceremony was performed by the Chief Justice of New Zealand, Sir Harold Barrowclough, K.C.M.G., C.B., D.S.O., M.C., E.D.

The weather upset plans for the function to be held outside the building. Instead, the large assembly of next-of-kin, representatives of local bodies, returned servicemen, and the public was brought inside, and completely filled the spacious new hall, overflowing into the foyers and entrance porch.

In the large photograph facing this page a number of those present are shown as the ceremony began. Next-of-kin are seated in the dress circle.
