The Canterbury Game

The Canterbury team's tour of this part of the country was far from a good advertisement for Canterbury football or East Coast weather. With the airport out of commission, due to the rain, the team had a trying trip to Ruatoria for the game with East Coast, which they played in a mudbath and won only in the last minute. At Gisborne they struck better weather, drew a large crowd to Rugby Park, and then disappointed them with a mediocre display of dour forward Rugby which pleased nobody and netted few points. They were indeed lucky to win. In the first spell the game came alive only when the young P. B. Back line swung into action. Final score: Canterbury 11, Poverty Bay 9.
