Girls Play Soccer
To help raise funds for the Poverty Bay Women's representative hockey team for its trip to the New Zealand championships, a soccer match was held at the Reserve, when "Town" beat "Country" by five goals to two.
The girls found that soccer had some points of similarity with hockey, were beginning to get the "hang" of the game in the second spell. They learned not to handle the ball by playing with their fists clenched.
The game was a bit of a headache for the referee, Mr McFarlane. And the same might be said for the girls who tried to "head" the ball!
