Preparations are afoot for the holding of a "soap–box derby" among Boy Scouts of the district. The derby is not expected to be on the scale of those in U.S.A, which carry a $5000 1st prize, but it will no doubt generate plenty of excitement among the boys. Here John Logan tries out his entry on Barker's Hill.

When the Pakura developed boiler trouble while unloading at Gisborne this month, she was unable to use her winches. The job was completed by lighters between ship and wharf.
