They're New Zealanders Now

×

In an impressive ceremony at the Gisborne City Council Chambers recently, seven Gisborne residents became naturalised New Zealanders. They were Mr and Mrs Svend Hjorth, both from Denmark, Mr and Mrs Svend Madsen, from Denmark and Holland, Mr Hendrikns Peterse, a Dutchman from Indonesia, Mr Nicola Larocca, an Italian, and Mr Salvatore Zame, another Italian, who has been in New Zealand since 1921, and as Charlie Zame is a well-known Gisborne identity in the fishing industry. The others have all been here for at least the minimum requirement of five years.

Councillors and their wives, Ministers of Religion, and other local body men were present at the ceremony by invitation. After a short address by the Mayor, Mr H. H. Barker, which included a warm welcome to the New Zealanders, each repeated the oath of allegiance to Queen and Country, and received the certificate of naturalisation.
