A Lovebird Makes Love

Budgerigars, or "budgies" as they are called for short, are good fun for bird enthusiasts. An Australian species of the parrot group, they can be taught to talk and play tricks. These pictures were taken at the home of Mr J. W. Penny, Parau Street, a "budgie" breeder. The cover picture shows Peter, one of Mr Penny's pet birds, with Valerie, one of Mr and Mrs Penny's attractive daughters.

Arranging Valerie for a cover picture was no trouble, but Peter .... well, take a look for yourself.

"Harry up, you with the camera — those luscious lips are waiting".

"Half-time...! Where are the oranges?"

×

"Now let's get in a real up– and-under!"

×

"Um–m–m–! Where have you been all my life, Valerie?"

×

"Great lover...? Say, I'm just a tired old bird."

Two of Peter's cobbers make a good picture as they cling to the cage netting.

"Want a picture? Wait until I get myself nicely framed." Close-up lens shows bright, parrot–like expression of budgie–bird.
Brilliant colours of budgerigars do not show in these monotone pictures. There are some 30 recognised shades of colour, but among the more rare are white-flighteds, opalines, and yellow–faced greys.

Well, if it isn't old Peter again! This time he's getting a lesson in appreciation of the ballet.

Another pair demonstrate why budgies are called love–birds.

Does he appreciate ballet? "Brother," he says, "it leaves me cold. Think I'll have another 40 winks"
