Goods train steams slowly over deviation as construction workers build caissons for new railway bridge extension over Waipaoa River

Almost forgotten in the blaze of publicity surrounding the opening of the new Matawhero highway bridge, the railway bridge over the Waipaoa, down near the sea, has nevertheless been the scene of much activity in recent weeks.

As part of the overall scheme for the Waipaoa River, plans were made, and are now being carried out, to raise' the bridge on its piles, and lengthen it by adding a new section at the Muriwai end.

These pictures were taken at the site a fortnight ago.
