The key project in a £1,000,000 scheme of river and road diversion, the new main highway bridge across the Waipaoa River at Matawhero, seven miles from Gisborne, was opened for traffic on May 18. Nearly three years were required for its construction, the completion of which was delayed by un-expected misfortunes, but the day finally came when the 1000ft link was ready. It was a race day. In the morning, traffic from points west and south of Gisborne came into town on the old bridge, built 50 years ago.
