Dancing in the Daytime

A scene at the first ball of the season? The picture above looks like it, except for the num ber on the gentleman's back in the distance.

When this picture was taken, it was mid-afternoon on Easter Saturday. The occasion for these diurnal terpsichorean goings-on (translate that with a dictionary) was the Poverty Bay Ballroom Dancing Championships. Local competitors met with stiff opposition from visitors from Wellington, Hamilton, Napier, and other parts, so that three of the open titles were won by outsiders, but in a number of events they held their own against all comers.
