Girder in Gladstone Road

Residents were amazed one day last month to see an enormous bridge girder, 108 feet long, travelling through Gladstone Road.

The girder was part of the new Hollywood bridge at Hangaroa, 28 miles from Gisborne. It was taken through the main street to be weighed at the weighbridge in Wainui Road. Each vehicle was run on the bridge. The weights: 11 ton 8 cwt, and 10 ton 3 cwt.

Two-way radio communication between the drivers at front and rear helps a lot on corners. Certainly the big girder made a natty turn (above) at the Peel Street corner.
