More Pictures of Late Night Life in the City

One Friday night earlier this year, the Editor of "Photo News" took a miniature camera and a spool of super-fast film into Gladstone Road and recorded the bustle of late night shopping on the Street. (P.N.No. 32).

Nov "Photo News" photographer Wilton Smith has gone a step further. He has pushed the camera inside the shops to capture on film an absorbing series of pictures showing the scene we all know so well but have never viewed in print — the infinitely-varied panorama of customers eyeing, trying, and buying the goods which crowd the counters and shelves of Gisborne's well-stocked shops.

Camera fans may be interested in the photographic technique which makes possible the pictures appearing in this series, for which no flash was employed.

A 35mm miniature camera was used, having a lens with a 45mm focal length, because of the good depth of focus available. Most of the pictures were taken at 1-30th sec. at f.3.5. but in the brighter shops it was possible to speed up to 1-60th at f.5.6. Panchromatic film was used with a Weston speed rating of 400, which was increased by double development in Microdol developer.
