Better Buildings

In keeping with the national trend, expenditure on public and commercial buildings has been rising in Gisborne. Among the many construction jobs in progress or completed recently are:

The Loan and Mercantile building in Gladstone Road, which has been entirely reconstructed.

The new Methodist Church in Gladstone Road near Roebuck Road, is now approaching completion.

Big change in Customhouse Street now in progress: the wooden portion of Williams & Kettle Ltd. being demolished to make way for up-to-date premises.

Good progress is being made with the alterations to the Gisborne Hotel. The whole building is being given a face-lift, and when finished it can be expected to present a handsome appearance from any angle. In this picture the familiar balcony is almost gone, and is being replaced with a modern verandah. Big interior alterations are also under way.

The new civic chambers in Fitzherbert Street have attracted a great deal of favourable comment now that the surroundings have been laid out in tidy lawns. A view of the Fitzherbert Street frontage, with the council chamber at right.
