Trees and Gardens

Macrocarpa trees grow to enormous girths in Gisborne's pleasant climate. The picture above shows sections cut from a macrocarpa recently felled in Stanley Road. Mr Roy Andrew, superintendent of reserves for the Gisborne City Council, is seen standing beside slabs which will be fashioned into seats for the botanical gardens.

At right is What may well be one of New Zealand's largest macrocarpas with Mr Andrew included in the picture to give scale to the tree's enormous girth, more than 30 feet round. This tree stands in the corner of the park domain, facing Gladstone Road opposite the Nelson Bridge road.

The loving care bestowed by Mr Andrews and his staff on flowerbeds counts for little with irresponsible vandals who sometimes frequent the botanical gardens. This photograph of a marigold bed shows where vandals have rolled flowers out flat.
