Crowded Beach Camps

Records were broken at both the Waikanae and Churchill Park beach camps this holiday season, when more campers were in residence than ever before. At both camps the "full house" sign was the order of most days throughout the period, as happy campers, pleased to find some dry weather, arrived from wetter regions. Visitors were generally high in their praises of the torn, the climate, the camps, and the beaches, and many booked on the spot for a return visit next year.

Close proximity of camp to beach is one reason why both Waikanae and Churchill Park are popular with campers. Another is the relative safety of the beaches, a factor which is enhanced by the constant patrols maintained by surf life-saving volunteers. As a result, family groups find Gisborne ideal, and this year's campers included a high proportion in this category. Such generalisations don't apply to everybody, of course. Outside one of the tents at Waikanae, "Photo News" discovered this honeymoon couple from Auckland (right). They thought the camp was ideal too, and they have no family—yet.
