Danger On The Beach

Bathers must watch their step on Waikanae Beach, Gisborne's summer playground for thousands of bare-footed children.

Danger, in the form of jagged fragments of glass, may be lying half-buried in the sand, or hidden amongst the drift-wood.

Thoughtless vandals who leave empty bottles in picnic spots and on the beach have created a big problem for Gisborne's civic authorities.

Despite continuing efforts by the caretaker, Mr Bill Thornton, to keep the beach clean, several children have already received cuts from broken bottles.

In appealing to citizens to help, the Mayor, Mr H. H. Barker, pointed out recently that offenders can be fined up to £20.
