The Hazards Of Golf
Even the most experienced golfers don't know what a "hazard" can mean –– unless they've played in a Gisborne R.S.A. tournament.
Bunkers and dongas are only minor obstacles compared with the outlandish devices set up on the Awapuni links for this year's tournament.
The catapault pictured right, for instance, would have tested the skill of a Peter Thomson. Firing the contraption is Jim Short, while Mick Morice, Frank Wheelan, & Keith Tarry attempt to control the machine.

There was "fatigue" before, as well as after, the tournament.
Scrubbing spuds are Curly Doyle and Dick Quinn.
Among the hazards at ex–kriegies' tent was outsize mallet. Swinging it is Sid Hall.
German guards (Tom Brooks & Harry Burburough) spring out from the "Black Forest"
The envy of all the boys was bun-hatted Derrick Fitzgerald, inventor of the water hazard. His Waaf belle: Ron Neild.

The Suez Canal had prominent place in the proceedings.
The Gully Gully boys (Noel Ensor, Alf Silvester) show selection of postcards to Colonel Nasser (Gil Tyer) and Anthony Le Brun, chief of the canal company (Owen Poole).
Ex–Naval "tea–pourer" (Lank Healey) was kept busy
And the canal itself was a hazard, as the picture left shows. Guiding ball through the canal into "utensil" is Barry Dods.
