Bill Lanigan, former Maori All Black, of Whangara, was killed when his motorcycle ran off the road near Tokomaru Bay last month.
Bill first became prominent as a Rugby player when he served in Japan with the occupation forces. He played for East Coast in 1948, and toured Australia as a Maori All Black the following year.
He was a winger in the Coast team which unsuccessfully challenged Wellington for the Ranfurly Shield in 1953.
He was a likely prospect for the combined team to play the Springboks this season, but broke his arm in a trial game.
