Real Pay-Dirt
Why buy land by the acre when you can buy it by the bag – along with your South Island potatoes?
Answer: Buying it with potatoes is much dearer.
At the rate of 1/6 a pound, an acre would cost around £336,000, which is pretty dear by any fanner's standards.
In 1401b bags of South Island potatoes, Gisborne grocers have found as much as 9¼1bs of dirt (dry weight). That means 13/11 worth of dirt in a sack retailing at £10.10s.
These displays, comparing sample lots of N.Z., Australian, and American potatoes, were prepared for "Photo News" by a Gladstone Road grocer, Mr Chas. Edwards. The pictures speak for themselves.
