Speed In The Sun

Gisborne Car Club members moved out to Ngatapa on a recent Sunday for the club's first speed event of the season. It was quite a day. The weather was perfect, the surroundings were ideal and the new bitumen road up Ngatapa hill gave competitors a chance to show the real merits of their cars.

Fastest time was registered by Rex Phelan in his Special — 59 1-10sec for the eight-tenths of a mile course. The car, seen being refuelled, is a true "bitzer". It has a Model T block and back end, a Rugby gearbox, a Frontenac racing head, and Morris brakes, steering box and wheels, with a specially-built chassis. At Muriwai it has run third to Roycroft's Jaguar.
