Memorable Game

×

"Tiny" replies to tributes from Rugby Union president Bernie Wolstenholme, and Licensed Victuallers' president Tom Smale.
September 22, 1956, is a date with bitter-street memories for Gisborne's Rugby public. It will be remembered as the day Poverty Bay won their first match on Rugby Park. Their 31-14 victory was the Olympians' first defeat.
But the date will also be remembered as the end of Richard White's football career.
The Rugby Union and Licensed Victuallers' Association recognised the occasion with handsome gifts to "Tiny" & Mrs White before the game. But most stirring of all was the crowd's ovation as White left the field in a scarlet jersey for the last time.
