New Gisborne Civic Chambers Opened

The pleasing design of the new building, erected at a cost of £30,888, was the subject of favourable comment by speakers, who included the Mayor, Mr H. H. Barker, the deputy Mayor, Mr R. A. Keeling, M.P., the chairman of the Power Board, Mr F. R. Bali, and the Minister.

The new civic chambers, of brick and concrete, with a frontage of 45 feet to Fitzherbert Street, houses all the administrative staff on the ground floor. Offices for the technical staff are located on the top floor. The council chamber itself, flanking the terrace, has an area of 38ft by 26 ft.

Last week, after the shift from Reads Quay, the council opened for business in the new premises. Light, airy, and modern, they made an immediate appeal to both staff and public.

Pictures on this page show three views taken on the ground floor.

New building is the beginning of the creation of a civic centre on the block of land bordered by Fitzherbert Street, Ormond Road, Vogel Street and the Taruheru River.
