Miss Lena Ruru, Palmerston Road, who has retired as Maori women's welfare officer for the Gisborne & Wairoa districts after six years' service.
Miss Ruru travelled thousands of miles in the course of her duties and took a special interest in establishing branches of the Maori Women's Welfare League. Members of two Nuhaka branches gathered to farewell her recently.

Mr Peter Gordon, son of Mrs K. Gordon, Childers Rd., who is one of three N.Z. representatives now attending the sixth International Student Conference in Ceylon.
An ex-pupil of Gisborne High School, Peter is a student of anthropology at Auckland University College. He is on the executive of the Students' Association.
After the conference, Peter will set out on goodwill tours of India, Pakistan, Burma, Thailand and the Philippines.

Mr M. G. Valk, new licensee of the Gisborne Hotel, and Mrs Valk. Mr Valk is formerly of Petone, the Manawatu district, and Woodville.

Mr H. L. Maynard, Haronga Road, who has retired from the staff of Dalgety and Company after 48 years' continuous service with the firm. He spent the last 20 years in the accounts department.
Mr. Maynard was born in Gisborne and has spent the whole of his life in this district. His father, the late Mr John Maynard, fought against Te Kooti.

Max Stein, son of Mr J. M. Stein, Childers Road, and the late Mrs Stein. An ex-pupil of Gisborne High School, Max has graduated B.Sc. at Victoria University College.
